The Athena II SBC from Diamond Systems combines the low-power Pentium-III class VIA Mark CoreFusion™ processor with on-board memory and data acquisition into a new compact form factor measuring only 4.2" x 4.5". The result is a small, low-heat-dissipation, and extremely rugged embedded CPU that fits in tight spaces and survives harsh environments. On-board 256MB RAM, LCD+CRT video, AC97 audio, 4 USB ports, 4 serial ports, a 16-bit low-noise data acquisition circuit, and extended temperature operation make Athena II an all-in-one, complete embedded solution for demanding applications.

Athena II can be customized for increased ruggedness. Options include latching connectors, hardwired configuration settings, rugged heat sink mounting, conformal coating, and BIOS modifications.

An enhanced set of I/O ports is provided to support any application's requirements, including 10/100Mbps Ethernet, UDMA-33 IDE, parallel port, PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports, and 4 USB 1.1 ports. The board also has 4 16450-compatible RS-232 serial ports. The watchdog timer provides protection from software crashes and is programmable for delays up to 2 seconds.

The built-in PC/104 expansion bus enables Athena II to work with almost all Diamond Systems data acquisition and communications modules, as well as hundreds of I/O boards from other vendors. The board can be provided with either stackthrough PC/104 connectors (standard) or non-stackthrough connectors for a slim baseboard application. The new compact 4.2" x 4.5" form factor, slightly larger than PC/104, enables Athena II to include more features on a single board and still fit inside our Pandora enclosure system

Integrated Data Acquisition

The optional data acquisition circuit provides high-accuracy, stable 16-bit A/D performance with 100KHz sample rate, wide input voltage capability up to +/-10V, and programmable input ranges. It includes 4 12-bit D/A channels, 24 programmable digital I/O lines, and two programmable counter/timers. A/D operation is enhanced by on-board FIFO with interrupt-based transfers, internal/external A/D triggering, and on-board A/D sample rate clock. Placement of the analog circuitry away from the high-speed digital logic ensures low-noise performance for critical applications. All data acquisition features are fully supported by our Universal Driver software for DOS, Linux, Windows 98/NT/2000/XP/CE, and VxWorks to simplify application development.

FEATURES
For use with Prometheus/Athena/ CPU and Panel I/O Board
Easy assembly - no internal cables required
No internal mounting rails or corner guides
Pretapped screw holes for clean, professional assembly
Available in several sizes to accommodate extra PC/104 boards
Fits notebook hard drive in addition to boards
Isolation-mount option
All hardware included

Pandora is an enclosure system designed by Diamond Systems for use with our PNL-EAP panel I/O board mated to a AthenaCPU board. (When mated to an Athena, the upper temperature limit is reduced.) It features fast and easy assembly due to the fact that most or all internal cables can be eliminated. Rather than requiring the installation of special corner mounts or forcing the stack into a set of corner guides, the entire stack is bolted directly to the front plate of the case, forming a rugged, easily-handled assembly.

FlashDisk Module

A 128MB FlashDisk module is included with the development kit. It provides 32MB of solid state memory that looks like a C drive to any operating system. See here for more detail on the FlashDisk module.

FlashDisk Programming / IDE Extender Board

The development kit also includes a handy breakout board that can be used for file transfer between the FlashDisk module and another drive during system development. It can also be used to enable simultaneous operation of two drives with Prometheus. Both 40-pin and 44-pin connectors and cables are included to allow connection to any type of drives, including 3.5" hard drives, notebook drives, and CD-ROM drives. See here for more detail on the extender board.

Autocalibration for Best Measurement Accuracy

Diamond’s top-performing autocalibration circuitry enables you to calibrate the analog circuits under software control at any time, maintaining best accuracy under all conditions. Temperature- and time-dependent measurement drift is eliminated, as the board can be calibrated as often as desired in just a few seconds to ensure accurate readings in all environments.

Thermal Management

Neptune places the processor on the bottom side of the board. An integrated heat spreader makes thermal contact with the heat generating components on the CPU module and provides a flat surface on the bottom side for mating to the system enclosure. This technique provides for efficient removal of heat from the CPU without the need for a fan.

Description

Neptune introduces a new concept in small form factor embedded SBCs. The CPU core consists of an ETX module which mounts on the bottom side of the board for improved thermal management. This technique provides more room on the main board for I/O features. The result is an efficient, cost-effective, reliable, and compact embedded SBC rich in I/O and user benefits. Neptune is the first 6-in-1 embedded SBC, integrating processor, system I/O, data acquisition, and even a DC/DC power supply onto a single board in the compact EPIC format. You can select from a wide range of ETX CPU modules from a world-class supplier to tailor Neptune’s price and performance to your application and budget. A PC/104-Plus expansion socket enables you to add still more I/O or features if needed, and the built-in 5-28V input DC/DC power supply provides flexibility in integrating the board with your system power supply. These features give Neptune an unsurpassed level of value and flexibility in a small form factor embedded SBC.

Benefits of 6-in-1 Integration

  • Less Space: Smaller and thinner than a stack of PC/104 boards
  • Lower Cost: An integrated solution eliminates extra PCBs and connectors to lower the unit cost
  • Higher Reliability: Less interconnects and components, resulting in higher reliability
  • More Rugged: The flatter profile and reduction in connectors makes Neptune far more rugged in mobile applications
  • Single Vendor: Purchasing and stocking are easier with a single board
  • Saves Time: Assembly effort is dramatically reduced, shortening your total system integration time
